    Technology student blogs I read

Andrew is an MSP in the greater NYC area and has recently started blogging about his Imagine Cup Game Design team.

This blog is going to be devoted to my triumphs and challenges in organizing, motivating, and facilitating an Imagine Cup game development challenge team for the '08 year. You'll get a glimpse of my experiences with the competition, the trials I'll face, and how I've gone about solving problems. The material will lean towards technical; but, will probably remain easy enough to understand for the non-programmer.

Nikita has been an MSP forever and often blogs about developer events in Tampa, as well as his musings on technology. I think he's spending a lot more time on Channel8 than his blog right now. :-)

Max is practically a student. ;-) He's our Channel8 guy and lately has been spending a lot of time perfecting his new bachelor pad in Seattle.

Who should I be reading? What blogs by technology students do you read?

    Game Camp (Toronto)

    Canadian Students…

On Saturday, November 11th, 2006, Microsoft will take anyone who has an interest in learning to build a game for Windows or the Xbox 360 through a day of fun and learning.  We call it GAME CAMP.    We’re inviting all students and hobbyists who are interested in learning about game development to this free event.  We’re even buying lunch!

    Here’s the abstract:
If building games for the Xbox 360 or Windows gets you excited then you have to be at this event.  For the first time, Microsoft will take you through the details of our (soon to be released) XNA Game Studio Express.  If you didn’t already know, anyone can now build interactive, high performance games for Windows or Xbox 360.  We’ll take you through an introduction of XNA and XNA Game Studio Express.  Then we’ll equip you with the skills to start building games ranging from 2-D Arcade to stunning interactive 3-D.

More information is here.   Sounds like fun and a great opportunity to learn more about game development.

    Gadgets for working out

I occasionally like gadgets. (Understatement? Maybe.) Yes, I've been known to carry around a few mobile devices, but these days my Smartphone and iPod are at the top of the list. My iPod is mostly used to entertain me while I work out, but my Smartphone is practically a member of the family. Today, as I was doing circuit training up Sleeping Giant with the Functional Fitness class I'm taking at the Yale gym, I realized I need a more versatile work out partner than the iPod is providing. Given that I also lost my heartrate monitor this week (I think I left it at the gym), I had two work out gadgets to shop for!

First, heartrate monitor. Done. Thanks to Amazon, I have a new PINK Polar F6 Women's Heart Rate Monitor on its way. :-D

Now to the entertainment. Do I wait on a Zune? I'm thinking that the Zune trade-off will be much like my initial iPod trade-offs and I'll decide it doesn't fit with my current (albeit weird) music routine of playing the same 20 songs* over and over. I'm not sure if Zune will be a comfortable device to sit on my arm and work out along with me.  That's research question 1.  So the Zune might end up as my alternative device, replacing the iRiver Clix, I expect. (Yes, I told you I like gadgets a little.) I read this review of Nike+ and am seriously considering checking it out. Unfortunately I'm finding the Nike site a little unbearable, so I'm taking a break and posting. Before I go back to researching if I like this, I'm thinking about functionality I might want soon... for instance, do I need/want GPS? Or maybe I should see this as more of a short term gadget and not worry about the functionality it's missing?  The only other thing keeping me from purchasing this is that my podiatrist at Pro Club in Redmond said that Nike makes crappy shoes. (I'm currently an Asics girl.) That's research issue 2.  Feedback is appreciated.  Now back to the researching!

*as a side note, I'd like to say that these are all really terrible songs. I won't try to defend this, but will say that anything that keeps me motivated at the gym is good enough for me. :-)

    Say Windows Vista

He has a US tour presented by Windows Vista.  His tour page is especially funny.  Unfortunately I have a conflict on the New York date.  :-/
